OUR MISSION
One community. Every stage of the healthcare journey.
Detroit Youth Health Expo (DYHE) is dedicated to exposing high school students to diverse healthcare careers while helping them build meaningful connections with healthcare professionals.
Through monthly programs, educational sessions, panels, networking events, mentorship, and career exploration activities, students gain insight into different healthcare pathways and the academic and professional steps needed to pursue them.
DYHE also provides undergraduate students with opportunities to mentor and support high school participants as near-peer mentors, facilitators, and role models. Undergraduate participants can engage in year-round programming designed for pre-medical students, including professional development, networking, leadership, mentorship, and engagement with healthcare professionals.

In collaboration with NextGen Detroit, the DYHE Mixer brings conference attendees and guests together for an evening of mingling, networking, and connection.

An immersive healthcare career exploration experience for high school students featuring educational sessions, panels, mentorship, and connections with healthcare professionals.

Learn what it takes to become a competitive applicant for professional school, from preparing your application to navigating the admissions cycle. Panelists will discuss traditional and non-traditional pathways, timelines, and important considerations along the way.
Nursing
Explore the diverse career pathways and specialties available within nursing, from ASN and BSN programs to advanced practice roles. Panelists will share their experiences, training pathways, and what students can expect from a career in nursing.
Made in Detroit
Correctional Psychiatry
Explore how psychiatrists address addiction, severe mental illness, and trauma in correctional and other underserved settings. Panelists will discuss the unique ethical challenges, interdisciplinary collaboration, career pathways, and growing need for physicians working with these populations.
Future of Anesthesia
Explore how evolving scope of practice, workforce needs, and healthcare policy are shaping collaboration among anesthesiologists, CRNAs, and anesthesiologist assistants. Representatives from each profession will discuss training pathways, career outlook, and the changing anesthesia care team to help students make informed career decisions.
Business of Medicine
Explore how entrepreneurship, physician ownership, private equity, and alternative practice models are reshaping the business of healthcare. Panelists will discuss how physicians can build businesses, maintain autonomy, and navigate the financial forces influencing modern medical practice.
Osteopathic Medicine
Explore the principles of osteopathic medicine, including hands-on osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM), and how they shape patient care. Hear from osteopathic physicians about their experiences and approach to caring for patients.
Pharmacy
Explore the diverse career paths and practice settings available within the field of pharmacy. Panelists will share their professional journeys and discuss the different routes students can take to pursue a career in the field.
Global Health
Explore how students and trainees can engage in global health ethically and responsibly through humility, cultural competence, and sustainable community partnerships. Panelists will discuss common pitfalls, meaningful opportunities, and pathways to global health involvement across all stages of training.
Street Medicine
Explore how street medicine brings healthcare directly to people experiencing homelessness and other underserved populations. Panelists will discuss the challenges, ethical considerations, and approaches to improving access to care beyond traditional clinical settings.
Community Care
Explore the unique health needs of Detroit communities and the barriers that can limit access to care, including social, cultural, and language factors. Learn how community clinics, healthcare professionals, students, and local partners work together to expand access, provide culturally responsive care, and reduce health disparities.

The program more than doubled its number of participating programs and expanded its school reach.

By year three, DYHE had reached 595 students across 75 programs and 26 schools, with $29,791.25 raised cumulatively.

What the growth means: DYHE has grown from 16 programs and 188 students in 2023 to 28 programs and 193 students in 2025, while expanding its school reach from 4 to 12 schools and accumulating nearly $30,000 in funds raised. The 2026 conference expands that growing pipeline to undergraduate, medical, and graduate students.
